The emission of heat-trapping gases, like carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O), has been a troubling trend in recent decades. Scientists have recently discovered that these gases reached record highs in 2023. According to the latest data from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the global average surface concentration of CO2 in 2023 was 419.3 parts per million (ppm). Methane, a more potent greenhouse gas, averaged 1922.6 parts per billion (ppb), while nitrous oxide levels slightly increased to 336 parts per billion. This represents a significant change compared to the atmosphere of a few decades ago.

The rise in these greenhouse gases is primarily driven by activities such as burning fossil fuels (e.g., coal, oil, and natural gas) for energy production and transportation, leading to emissions from vehicles, factories, and power plants. Additionally, deforestation and land-use changes contribute to CO2 emissions, while agricultural practices, such as rice cultivation and livestock farming, release methane and nitrous oxide. Furthermore, industrial processes, including cement production and chemical manufacturing, also release significant amounts of CO2 and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

What do these numbers mean ?

These number show that we still have a long way to go , we need to immediately slash down to zero emissions as soon as possible .
The increase in the presence of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O), in the Earth’s atmosphere is directly contributing to a rise in global temperatures, driving climate change. The increase in such greenhouse gases in the atmosphere in turn, have profound implications for human societies, leading to challenges such as food and water shortages, increased frequency of natural disasters, loss of habitable land due to sea-level rise, and threats to infrastructure and livelihoods
