The Paris Climate Agreement, established in 2015, was a historic accord in which nearly every nation committed to keeping global warming well below 2 degrees Celsius and ideally below 1.5 degrees Celsius, but despite the global pledge , 2024 is on track not only to become the warmest year ever and it is also on track to surpass the global average temperature of 1.5 degrees Celsius. The unusually high temperatures this year are evident all over the globe, like Japan’s Mount Fuji, For the first time in 130 years, went through the entire month of October without a single flake of snow. Another unusual event that occurred for the first time in history was locals in Saudi Arabia’s Al-Jawf region awoke to a blanket of fresh snow atop its brown, arid landscape following intense rain and hail. According to the UAE’s National Center of Meteorology (NCM) the anomalous occurrence was also attributed to the low-pressure system brewing in the Arabian Sea.

After 10 months of 2024 it is now virtually certain that 2024 will be the warmest year on record and the first year of more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above per industrial levels according to the ERA5 dataset which is a is a global climate reanalysis dataset produced by the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). It provides detailed information on atmospheric, land, and oceanic conditions, going back as far as 1950. This marks a new milestone in global temperature records and should serve as a catalyst to raise ambition for the upcoming Climate Change Conference, COP29.

As the U.S. political landscape shifts, so does the nation’s climate policy trajectory. Over the past four years, President Biden focused on restoring, expanding, and fortifying America’s stance on climate change. Biden pledged to make the United States a leader in global climate action, recognizing the country’s historic role as one of the world’s largest fossil fuel polluters.
